María S. Tapia was born in Caracas. She is a Biologist and Doctor in Food Science from Universidad Central de Venezuela and works in the Institute of Food Science and Technology of the Faculty of Sciences. She has a Master of Science from Michigan State University. She created the "Foundation 5aDay Venezuela" that promotes the daily consumption 5 servings of fruits and vegetables for prevention of chronic diseases and micronutrient deficiencies. She has authored and co-authored around 100 publications as peer reviewed articles and book chapters. She has edited 4 books internationally in the area of food and fruit preservation, and co-authored a FAO handbook on food preservation and has coordinated several research on food and fruit preservation.
