The Brazilian Academy of Sciences and IANAS, with the support of IAP, organized the event “A Scientific Call for COP30: Science Academies United for Climate Action” from October 20–22 in Manaus, Brazil. This landmark scientific meeting was held in preparation for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which took place on November 10–21, 2025, in Belém do Pará, Brazil.
Held at the headquarters of INPA (National Institute for Research of the Amazon), the meeting brought together leading researchers from Brazil and abroad, representatives of Science Academies from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe, and Brazilian governmental authorities to discuss urgent topics and proposals for COP30.
The event concluded with the release of a joint statement of recommendations prepared by the participating organizations. Signed by 42 entities (38 science academies and 4 IAP regional networks), the statement aims to contribute to and inform the COP30 deliberations. By uniting the collective voice of science academies worldwide, the initiative seeks to strengthen the role of science in shaping climate policy and promoting sustainable futures.
Building on this shared scientific perspective, the statement emphasizes that COP30, held for the first time on the edge of the Amazon Rainforest, must mark a true “turning point” in the global climate agenda and cannot end with vague commitments or postponed promises. To achieve this, the document calls for strengthened international cooperation for the protection of tropical forests, increased investment in mission-oriented science, and the elevation of biodiversity from a peripheral concern to a central pillar of climate negotiations.
Entitled “A Scientific Call for COP30: Science Academies United for Climate Action”, the statement is endorsed by almost 40 Academies of Sciences and the four regional networks under the umbrella of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP). The document was sent to Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, President of COP30, on November 3, and shared with the Office of the President of Brazil as well as the Brazilian Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Environment and Climate Change (MMA). Its goal is to support discussions and negotiations during COP30.
