The Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) held its 8th General Assembly (GA) on September 3-4, 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico. The GA was hosted by the Mexican Academy of Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). The General Assembly brought together IANAS member Academies and representatives from twenty invited academies, to appraise the network’s actions in the 2022-2025 triennium, to revise the Statutes and approve the Rules of Procedures, and to elect the leadership of the network for the next three years.
Karen Strier, from the US National Academy of Sciences, and Alberto Gago, from the National Academy of Sciences of Peru, were unanimously elected IANAS Co-chairs for the period 2025-2028. They, along with the following Academies, will serve on the new Executive Committee: Mexican Academy of Sciences, Chilean Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Honduras, Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Brazilian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Bolivia and the National Academy of Sciences of Argentina. The Brazilian Academy of Sciences was also unanimously elected to host the IANAS Secretariat, and Marcos Cortesão was appointed as its Executive Director.
In addition to the governance activities held during the General Assembly, a series of distinguished lectures were organized by José Antonio Seade Kuri, on topics related to Sustainability, AI, and Water Quality, among others.
