Introduction
In October 2025, the IANAS Water Program held two major events within the framework of the IANAS Amazon Initiative: the conference “New Scientific Horizons for the Amazon and its Sustainability” and the workshop “Management of Waters, Forests and Sand in the Amazon – Security for Ecosystems and Human Health.”
Both activities were coordinated by the IANAS Water Program Focal Point for Peru, Nicole Bernex, together with the Program’s Co-Chair, Katherine Vammen. The events were supported by IAP/IANAS, the National Academy of Sciences of Peru, and the Compañía de Minas Buenaventura.
Conference in Lima
The National Academy of Sciences of Peru and the IANAS Water Program organized the conference “New Scientific Horizons for the Amazon and its Sustainability”. Held on October 14 at the NOS PUCP Cultural Center Auditorium in Lima, the event brought together national and international experts working on issues related to water and the Peruvian Amazon.
The conference aimed to analyze the dynamics and critical topics associated with the environmental and social challenges of the Andean Amazon, highlighting key elements for understanding the region’s complexity. It also offered an important opportunity for active dialogue between the audience and participating experts, fostering meaningful exchanges on the various subjects addressed throughout the program.

Workshop in Iquitos
From October 15 to 17, 2025, the IANAS Water Program held a research workshop in Iquitos, Department of Loreto, in the Peruvian Amazon. The event focused on examining current practices in the management of water, forests, and sand in the region, fostering exchanges among experts and researchers from diverse institutions and disciplines. Discussions centered on key environmental and social challenges affecting the Andean Amazon, with the aim of gathering inputs to support the development of a research and intervention project designed to inform local and regional strategies and public policies.
The workshop spanned three days of intensive dialogue between international water specialists and Peruvian researchers and began with a field visit to observe sand-mining sites and the Varillales Forests within the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve. At the conclusion of the program, an open conference was held for students, professors, and public officials in Iquitos, during which the workshop’s findings were presented. A research and intervention project is now being drafted, based on the key themes identified and the priority issues highlighted during the workshop.
