Dr. Mónica Mazariegos winner of the WfS Young Scientist Research Award 2023

Dr. Mónica Mazariegos – Guatemala

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dr. Mónica Mazariegos is the winner of the IANAS-WfS Young Scientist Research Award 2023.

Dr. Mazariegos is a researcher at the INCAP Research Center for the Prevention of Chronic Diseases (CIIPEC) at the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP). She has a strong training in nutritional epidemiology and epidemiological methods. Mónica also counts with more than twelve years of experience in the identification and analysis of health problems from a life-course perspective and in the analysis of complex longitudinal data. She has worked with population-based cohorts in Guatemala, Mexico, and France.

Participation at the International Conference of Urban Health in Valencia, Spain, October, 2022. Dr. Mazariegos was a speaker in the symposium “Health in Motion”, she shared results on the double burden of malnutrition in Latin American cities.

Her research focuses on the epidemiology of all forms of malnutrition, the design and evaluation of programs and policies to improve population nutrition, maternal and child health, the epidemiology of pregnancy, women’s reproductive health across the life-course, breastfeeding, and the identification of nutritional, metabolic, lifestyle and urban risk factors for obesity and diabetes. Dr. Mazariegos has led studies on obesity prevention, multi-center studies on breastfeeding and body composition, and on inequities in all forms of malnutrition in Latin America. By leading these studies in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), she has obtained experience in collecting data, developing survey tools, training staff, ensuring data quality, managing field related issues, supervising data management, analyzing data, and writing progress reports and scientific publications.

Dr. Mazariegos reflected on the priorities for chronic disease prevention in the Latin American Region at the International Congress of Nutrition. Guatemala City, 2019.
