This talk, organized for students, professors and public of Iquitos, brought together leading national and international experts to reflect on the new scientific challenges and horizons related to the Amazon and its sustainability.
During the conference, key issues were addressed regarding the interrelationship between forests, water, and sand mining in the Peruvian Amazon, as well as the degradation of water ecosystems, the loss of biodiversity, the effects on human health, and the challenges of sustainable construction in tropical environments.
Notable guest speakers included:
- Dr. Nicole Bernex (PUCP – ANC), on forest degradation, biodiversity loss, and water.
- Dr. Hugo Hidalgo (Geophysical Research Center, University of Costa Rica), on climate variability and climate change.
- Dr. Ernesto González (Institute of Experimental Biology, Central University of Venezuela), on the impact of deforestation and extraction on water bodies.
- Dr. Ricardo Izurieta (University of South Florida), on the effects on human health.
- Francisco Otero (PUCP), on the challenges of construction in the Amazon.
- Dr. Katherine Vammen (Co-chair of the IANAS Water Program), on the sustainability of water, forests, sand, and communities.
