Dr. Frances Henry is a social anthropologist and one of Canada’s leading experts on race, racialization and racism in Canadian society. Her anthropological cultural area of study is the Caribbean where she began her life long research on African derived religious movements. Now retired as a Professor Emerita from York University in Toronto, she also taught at McGill University in Montreal for many years before moving to Toronto. She has had, and continues to have, a significant research and writing career and is now at work on her fifteenth book. Henry has also been active in applied community oriented work especially in race and ethnic relations in Canadian society. She is a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Canada. She has been married for fifty four years to Trinidadian born Jeff Henry, has two children and five grandchildren.

Professor Neela Badrie is the holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of London, LPC from the University of Staffordshire, UK B.Sc. in Natural Science, a M.Sc. in Food Technology, and Ph.D. in Food Science, from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

Her teaching and research areas are in environmental and food microbiology, food quality and safety, food risk management systems and food product development.  She serves as an editor or reviewer for several International refereed journals

She is Fulbright scholar and was awarded the Rudranath Capildeo gold medal award for applied Science and Technology from National Institute for Higher Education in Science and Technology (NIHERST).  She has received several fellowships/scholarships such as the Fulbright, European Union/ Caribbean and Pacific (CARPIMS), European Union IV CULP/UWI Association of Common Wealth University (ACU),   US Visiting international exchange scholar and TWAS/CARISCIENCE young scientist award.

She has served as Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation and was the Head of the Department of Food Production, Faculty of Food and Agriculture, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

Professor María del Carmen Samayoa, from Guatemala and president of the Guatemala Academy of Medical,Physical and Natural Sciences, is Biochemical specialist with a Masters degree in Toxicology . She has dedicated her career to Applied Research. As a result of that, she has presented 89 publications in International Scientific Journals. She has also made two chapters in food storage book. Is also a Committee member of COGUANOR (for accreditation of laboratories), and laboratory auditor for ISO 17025.As a teacher, she has worked in two of the most distinguished universities of Guatemala. Active member of the National Council of Science and Technology. In the present, she is a member of ICSU Regional Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean. Secretary of the Caribbean Scientific Union Board, and member of the Executive Committee of IANAS.

Ana Denicola was born in Montevideo, Uruguay; obtained a B.S. in Chemistry and the Pharmaceutical Chemist degree at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Virginia Tech, VA, USA. She is now Full Professor of Physical Biochemistry at the Institute of Chemical Biology, School of Science, UdelaR. She was Head of the Institute from 2005 to 2010 and now Council Faculty Member. Also First Level Researcher in Biology and Chemistry (PEDECIBA) and Senior Investigator of the National Research System of Uruguay (SNI Nivel III). She is a member of the recently created National Academy of Science in Uruguay (ANCiU).

Her research activities are centered on the kinetic and physicochemical characterization of free radicals and derived-species produced in vivo. The importance of these reactive species in biology is now envisioned not only related to cellular damage and toxicity but also to cell signaling and physiology. She has published over sixty articles in peer-reviewed journals and invited reviews to books; lectured in Latin America, United States and Europe, at Universities, International Research Conferences and Courses. She has directed and continues directing numerous PhD and MSc thesis in the area of chemistry, biology, biochemistry, biothecnology and biomedicine.

My name is Carol A. Gross. I am Professor at UCSF and am very active in the graduate programs, especially teaching and mentoring students. For most of my career, I used molecular approaches to study transcriptional regulation and stress responses in the bacterium E. coli. Recently the laboratory has switched to functional genomics, where we are developing high throughput phenotyping approaches to rapidly discover gene function and cellular networks. It is very exciting, both because we are learning so many new things, and also because we are creating resources to advance research across the bacterial community. My other passion is increasing diversity in STEM. I spearhead efforts at UCSF to increase enrollment of graduate students from underrepresented groups, and to develop programs to make UCSF welcoming for all. We are making progress but it is slow. I am honored to have received the AAAS mentorship award, the NAS Selman Waksman Award for achievement in Microbiology and to have served on the Council of the NAS, where I became aware of the wonderful work of IANAS. My two children, Miriam and Steve and my other families–biological and chosen, enrich my life.

Dr. Liliana López is a full Professor of Geochemistry of the Earth Sciences Institute (Faculty of Sciences) at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and head of the Petroleum Geochemistry Research Group.

She is graduate in Chemistry (UCV), and PhD in Geochemistry (UCV). Her research area is Organic Geochemistry. Her topics of interest are: 1) Petroleum Geochemistry in source rocks identification, oil-oil and oil-source rocks correlation and reservoir geochemistry; biomarkers, oil biodegradation and trace elements; 2) Characterization of organic matter in soils and sediments with emphasis in the identification or natural and anthropogenic organic matter. She held the position of President of the Latin American Association of Organic Geochemistry, and currently is the Venezuelan delegate. She held various positions in the Earth Sciences Institute (Head of the Geochemistry Center, Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies in Geochemistry).
Guest researcher at INTEVEP (Venezuelan Institute for Petroleum Research) and the French Petroleum institute (IFP), visiting professor at the University of Los Andes (Venezuela) and at the Universities of Rio Grande and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).

She has directed 44 undergraduate and 18 postgraduate theses and has published 90 papers in national and international journals, two books and three books chapter. Awarded the Orinoquia prize for the best Postgraduate thesis (1993), recognition of the research awarded by the Faculty of Sciences (1993), Academic Career Award Dr. Enrique Montbrum (Professors Association-UCV, 2006), Award “Lorenzo Mendoza Fleury” XVII Edition (2015). Distinguished with the order UCV José María Vargas in second (2003) and first class (2011).

She is Member of the Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences; Chair N° XXV (2015-current) and coordinator of the Women in Science Program for Venezuela.
