Nominations from Underrepresented Countries are Encouraged
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has opened the call for nominations for its Affiliated Membership 2026, a prestigious recognition granted by TWAS to outstanding young scientists in developing countries. Through its Regional Partner for Latin America and the Caribbean (TWAS-LACREP), TWAS is seeking nominations of exceptional early-career researchers who have demonstrated internationally recognized excellence and made significant contributions to the advancement of science.
Nominations will be accepted until June 10, 2026, and may be submitted by TWAS Fellows, scientific institutions, academies, or other qualified organizations. Individual applications from young scientists are also accepted. Click here to download the nominations form. Completed nomination forms must be sent to [email protected].
Particular attention is being given to expanding participation across underrepresented countries in the region. Nominations from the following countries are especially encouraged: Bolivia, El Salvador, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Paraguay. Special provisions are also in place, allowing flexibility in eligibility criteria for women scientists and researchers in displacement or exile situations. This inclusive approach aims to broaden access and identify talent across diverse scientific communities.
Who can be nominated
Candidates should be young scientists of high international standard, with a strong track record of research achievements and impactful scientific contributions. The program is designed to recognize emerging leaders whose work is shaping the future of science in their respective regions.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Researchers must either:
- Be 40 years of age or younger and hold a PhD, or
- Have obtained their PhD within the last five years (men) or eight years (women)
- Candidates must have lived and worked in a developing country for at least three consecutive years prior to nomination
- A strong record of scientific publications is essential, with evaluation based on quality, relevance, and impact
The selection process also considers the research environment and available resources, ensuring a fair and context-sensitive evaluation of scientific achievements.
Benefits of Affiliated Membership
Selected candidates will become TWAS Young Affiliates for a six-year term, gaining access to a wide range of opportunities, including:
- Participation in TWAS General Meetings and conferences
- Engagement with regional scientific networks and TWAS activities
- Eligibility for TWAS Awards
- Increased visibility through inclusion in TWAS publications and directories
Although this status does not automatically lead to full TWAS membership, it represents an important step in strengthening international scientific collaboration and recognition.
IANAS encourages academies, universities, research centers, and scientific networks across the Americas to nominate outstanding young researchers and widely disseminate this call within their communities.
