Event organized by the ISC, the IAP and the SCGES will be held online on February 11
On 11 February 2026, coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the International Science Council (ISC), the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), and the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES) will jointly host the webinar “Women in scientific organizations: global evidence from science academies and unions“. The session, held from 14:00 to 16:00 UTC, will present the findings of a landmark study examining gender equality across scientific academies, unions, and disciplinary societies worldwide over a 10‑year period (2015-2025).
The new ISC–IAP–SCGES report compiles institutional data from 136 scientific organizations, reflections from nearly 650 scientists, and targeted qualitative interviews, offering the most comprehensive assessment to date of how women access, participate in, lead, and are recognized within scientific institutions around the world. The study highlights both quantitative trends over the past decade and lived experiences that reveal the structural and cultural barriers still limiting equitable participation. It also documents organizational practices associated with more inclusive environments, helping identify where interventions have been most effective.
Issues to be addressed and Program Highlights
Gender equality is essential not only as a matter of fairness but also for strengthening the quality, relevance, and impact of science. As demonstrated by the 10‑year dataset, institutions with inclusive governance and proactive gender policies show higher levels of participation, improved leadership diversity, and more robust scientific communities.
During the webinar, participants will hear about representation and leadership trends for women across the global scientific landscape; institutional policies and governance structures that are linked to more gender‑responsive organizations; persistent inequities and the areas where progress has stalled; and first‑person perspectives from scientists and leaders reflecting on barriers and enablers within scientific organizations. These insights are expected to support science academies, unions, and policymakers – including those across the Americas – as they work to strengthen gender equality within their respective institutions.
