Women Who Share Their Science: Last Conference of the Year
Next Wednesday, November 19, at 1 p.m. (Colombia GMT-5) will take place the last edition of the year of the Women Who Share Their Science conference series. On this occasion, Prof. Yenny Hernández, a Physicist and Proffessor at Universidad de los Andes, Colombia, will give a lecture entitled New quantum phenomena in liquid-phase exfoliated materials.
Liquid-phase exfoliation has enabled the production of two- dimensional materials with emerging properties that are not observed in their conventional forms. These materials offer an ideal environment for exploring new quantum phenomena due to their low dimensionality, electronic confinement, and strong spin-orbit interaction in some cases. Some of these emerging properties and their possible application in energy generation devices will be discussed in this lecture.

The Women for Science program of IANAS organized a series of monthly conferences “Mujeres que cuentan su ciencia” (Women Who Share Their Science) given by female scientists from countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Women Who Share Their Science: Decoding Dengue
On Friday, October 10, at 4 p.m. Argentina time (7 p.m. UTC) took place the sixth edition of the Women Who Share Their Science conference series organized by the Women for Science program. On this occasion, Dr. Carolina Alduvín Sainz, a biologist specialized in Genetics and Developmental Biology, gave a lecture entitled “Decoding Dengue”.
Women Who Share Their Science: “Beyond the Stars: The Mysteries of the Universe”

The fifth edition of the conference series Women Who Talk About Their Science, organized by the Women for Science program, took place on Wednesday, September 10, at 4:30 p.m. Argentina time (7:30 p.m. UTC). On this occasion, Dr. Mónica Rubio, a researcher at the University of Chile, gave a talk entitled “Beyond the Stars: The Mysteries of the Universe”.
Join us on a fascinating journey through the most mysterious regions of the cosmos, where stars are born and possibly…life. We will explore how, thanks to radio astronomy, we can look beyond the visible and understand the origin of planets. You will see that, like us, stars are also born, live, and die. And finally, we will dive into the coldest and darkest corners of the universe, where the molecules essential for the emergence of life are hidden.
WOMEN FOR SCIENCE PRESENTATION AT IANAS GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2025

Dr. Gloria Dubner, IANAS Women for Science Co-Chair, representated the program at the IANAS GeneralAssembly 2025, held in Mexico City on September 3-4. At this event, Dr. Dubner went through the Women for Science activities that were carried out during the 2022-2025 triennium.
Dr. María Eugenia Francia, from Uruguay, is the winner of the Women for Science contest Anneke Levelt-Senger’s Prize 2025.
Dra. María Eugenia Francia is 39 years old, she has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Sciences from the Department of Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry. University of Idaho, USA, a Doctoral degree in Cellular Biology/Molecular Parasitology from the Department of Cellular Biology. University of Georgia, USA, and a postdoc in the Cell Cycle Regula on Laboratory from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia. Portugal, and a postdoc in the Molecular Biology Unit from the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo (IPMON). She is currently a Principal Investigator at the Laboratory of Apicomplexan Biology. Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, Uruguay. She has more than 30 publications in high-impact journals in the field, and has been an invited speaker at several national and international scientific conferences.

The IANAS Women for Science (WfS) Working Group, every other year holds the Women for Science prize. It is named after Anneke Levelt-Sengers in recognition of her outstanding work devoted to promoting women for science in the Americas.
The winning nominee is allocated a U$S 3000 prize to spend on suitable activities related to her research work.

Let’s Discover Female Scientists! short video contest

Every year the Women for Science program holds a short video contest called Let’s Discover Female Scientists! (¡Descubramos a las científicas!). The Prize is aimed at Latin American & Caribbean secondary school students (ages 14-18) and university students (ages 19-23). Their participation consists in making a brief informative video about a female Latin American or Caribbean scientist and her scientific contributions in her field of study. The selected winners of the 2025 edition of the contest were:
- Category 14-18:
1st Place: Bernando Leal (Venezuela).
2nd Place: Santiago de la Rosa Alejandra Sarabie (Colombia). - Category 19-23:
1st Place: Alexei Pastrana Escalona (Mexico)
2nd Place: Catalina Fuentes Rubio (Colombia)
Women Who Share Their Science: “Hydrogen sulfide, a new ancient molecule”

On Thursday, July 10, a lecture by Beatriz Álvarez (professor and researcher at the University of the Republic, Uruguay) entitled: “Hydrogen sulfide, a new ancient molecule” took place as the fourth conference of the Women Who Share Their Science series.
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), linked to the origin of life on Earth, is toxic to humans; however, it has potentially beneficial effects on health. The mechanisms by which it acts are not yet understood. This talk will present the biological chemistry of H2S.
Women Who Share Their Science: “The Beauty of the Intangible”

On Wednesday June 18, a lecture by Adriana Hansberg (Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics at UNAM, Mexico) entitled: “The Beauty of the Intangible” took place, as the third conference of the Women Who Share Their Science series.
The talk focused, in a very illustrative way, on interesting color patterns and enigmatic numbers from the world of combinatorics.
Women Who Share Their Science: “Climate Change, focusing on the impacts of global environmental change on plants and soils, from the Arctic to the tropics”

On Friday, May 23, a lecture by Andrea Vicent from the University of Costa Rica took place as the second conference of the Women Who Share Their Science series. She spoke about Climate Change, focusing on the impacts of global environmental change on plants and soils, from the Arctic to the tropics.
Women Who Share Their Science: Hearing Health

On Friday, April 11, the first conference in the series Women Who Share Their Science was held, organized by the IANAS Women for Science program. Dr. Ana Belén Elgoyhen, Senior Researcher at CONICET and Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, spoke about Hearing Health.
The sense of hearing allows us to perceive and process the sounds around us, playing a fundamental role in communication, orientation, and perception of the world. During the talk, she addressed common hearing disorders caused by age, exposure to loud sounds, and genetics.
