In their message, the IANAS Co-Chairs expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families following the attack, which resulted in loss of life, injuries, and severe damage to one of Ukraine’s leading scientific institutions. The statement highlights the critical role scientific institutions play as centers of knowledge, research, education, and innovation. It emphasizes that attacks on such institutions have consequences that extend far beyond physical damage, disrupting scientific activities, international cooperation, and the preservation of knowledge for future generations.
Science as a bridge for dialogue and peace
The IANAS Co-Chairs further reiterated the Network’s commitment to the protection of academic and scientific freedom and underscored the importance of ensuring that researchers, educators, and students can carry out their work in safe and secure environments. The statement also recognizes the unique role of science in fostering dialogue, promoting cooperation across borders, and building bridges in times of conflict.
IANAS joins scientific academies and organizations around the world in calling for the protection of scientific and educational institutions and their communities at all times.
